Jacob^7 Lott Van Wicklen
(Garret^6, Derrick^5, Gerrit^4, Evert^3, Gerrit^2, Jentie^1 Jeppes), was b. 18 August 1839, Jamaica, NY, bap. 28 November 1839, Jamaica RDC, and d. 4 May 1906. He married 10 March 1864 to Katherine "Katie" Compton (b. Sept 1846, NY).

Children: Susan^8 Van Wicklen, b. abt 1867, NY; Sarah^8 Van Wicklen, b. abt 1868, NY

Jacob Lott Van Wicklen was the very first telephone subscriber in Richmond Hill in 1889 (13 years after the telephone was invented). Jacob was a dealer in provisions, groceries, flour and feed. He was also the first Postmaster in Richmond Hill; a part of his country store was the Post Office. It was located on Park Street (117th Street) and Jamaica Avenue in the triangle formed by Park St., Jamaica Avenue and Myrtle Ave. (source: http://www.richmondhillhistory.org/rhtelephone.html)

Long Island Cemetery Inscriptions

1850 US Census for North Hempstead, Queens, NY (20 September 1850) lists G. Van Wicklen, age 42, farmer with wife, Ann E., 37, and the following children: Richard, 16, Wm McKey, 13, Jacob, 10, Sarah, 7, Phebe, 6, Lewis, 4, and Margaret, 7 months. Also listed in this household are Jacob Van Wicklin, 26, male, black and Sarah Van Wicklin, 16, female, black. Could the latter two individuals be black servants or slaves of Garret Van Wicklin?

1870 US Census for Jamaica, Queens, NY lists Jacob Vanwicklen, 32, (Ret.) Grocer, with wife, Catherine, 22, keeping house, and daughters, Susan, 3, and Sarah, 2, at home. All were b. NY.

1880 US Census for Queens borough, Queens, NY Districk 275 lists Jacob Van Wycklin, 35, grocer, and wife, Catherine, 31, keeping house, with daughters, Susan, 14, at school, and Sarah, 12, at school. All b. NY with parents b. NY. 

Brooklyn Eagle, December 24, 1885, page 8 - Her Bondsmen must pay.  Annie M. Tribon, who was arrested about three weeks ago, charged with keeping a disorderly house at 283 Sackett street, and who was released on bond, failed to appear when her case was called in Justice Massey's court this morning. Her bail was declared forfeited. Jacob L. Van Wicklen, of New Lots, is the bondsman. He will lose $200.

Brooklyn Eagle, August 24, 1896, Page 4 - Van Wicklen Under Arrest. Richmond Hill, L.I., August 24 - Jacob Van Wicklen, ex-postmaster here, was arrested and taken to Brooklyn by a United States marshal this morning. His shortage is $480. Two of his bondsmen, Daniel Higbie and John Kerz, refused to make good his deficit. An aunt of Van Wicklen has agree to settle the matter, and his detention will probably be for nly a few hours.

Brooklyn Eagle, December 27, 1896, page 14 - One Post Office Less. Richmond Hill, L.I. December 26 - John Homeyer, who was appointed by the postal authorities to fill the unexpired term of Jacob Van Wicklen, has been appointed by President Cleveland for a full term of four years and the appointment has been confirmed by the senate. As Homeyer cannot be supplanted by a Republican for four years unless for cause, the Republicans of the district are very much enraged. Van Wicklen's term would have expired in April and a number of Republicans were hustling for the office and Walter Carl, son of Eli Carl, one of the most influential Republicans in the district, had received the endorsement of the county Republican committee for the office.
